  • This session was designed to provide a detailed introduction to the structure and use of the Korean Welfare Panel data and is aimed at researchers in fields such as health and welfare, economics, and social sciences. It aims to provide practical guidance for more effective use of the panel data.

  • Researchers from KIHASA made presentations on sharing practical, hands-on information.

The session began at 1:30 pm with a 20-minute introduction to the Korean Welfare Panel by Research Fellow Lee Won-jin.
From 1:50 to 2:20 pm, Researcher Kang Ye-eun gave a 30-minute presentation on the structure of the survey questionnaire.
Following that, Shin Jae-dong, Head of the Data and Survey Management Unit presented on weighting methods and data processing and merging techniques, with 30 minutes allocated to each topic.

  • The Korean Welfare Panel is the largest-scale panel survey in Korea, jointly conducted by KIHASA and the Seoul National University Social Welfare Research Center. Since 2006, it has annually tracked over 7,000 households nationwide.

  • As well as being representative of the whole country - including Jeju Island and agricultural/fishing households ? the panel survey also includes low-income households, which make up half of the sample, making it particularly suitable for analyzing low-income populations. The data cover a wide range of topics, including the actual living conditions and welfare needs of the Korean population, and are widely used not only in social welfare research, but also in economics, sociology, public health, and related fields.

  • Research Fellow Lee Won-jin commented, “The Korean Welfare Panel is a nationally representative dataset known for its reliability and broad applicability. It is actively used not only in social welfare studies, but also in economics, sociology, public administration, statistics, demography, and public health.” He added, “We hope that this session will help researchers gain a deeper understanding of the Panel and make greater use of the data in their work.”
