Choi:
The Integrated Care Service for People with Severe Developmental Disabilities started in June 2024. Professor Kim Mi-ok, could you explain in more detail what this service entails?
Kim:
The Developmental Disabilities Act was enacted on June 10, 2022. This service began in earnest on June 11, 2024, two years after the enactment. As the name suggests, this is a social service designed specifically for people with severe developmental disabilities, especially those with extreme behaving challenges, who, despite the availability of social services, have been unable to access them and have been socially excluded, left out of service provision . The aim of this service is to promote their social inclusion and provide them with the foundation to live on as healthy and happy citizens. Moreover, this integrated care service is not only for people with developmental disabilities themselves, but also aims to reduce the care burden on their families.
