1-Minute KIHASA: KIHASA Research Overview in 1 Minute

I’m sure you all find digital kiosks fast and easy to use.

However, for some people, they can be a major barrier.

According to the Health and Welfare Policy Forum (November 2024 issue) by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, only 17.9% of the elderly were able to use kiosks to place orders or check in, indicating the overall vulnerability of the elderly in using kiosks.

In particular, less than 10 percent of those aged 75 and older and less than 3 percent of those aged 85 and older said that they could use kiosks, highlighting that this vulnerability increases with age.

Such vulnerability could make it difficult for older people to adapt to a rapidly changing information society.

In fact, 67.2 percent of the elderly reported struggling to adapt to the rapidly advancing information society.

To address this issue, we need to provide more opportunities for digital education and create an environment that encourages the elderly to use digital devices.

Currently, classes on how to use kiosks are provided in places like government offices, welfare centers, and businesses. However, regular training sessions should be made available in places that are more accessible to older people.

These practices will help alleviate the fear older people have about using kiosks.

Our society must come together to ensure that no one is excluded from access to the skills needed to use kiosks.
